Deciding to go to a party when you really can’t be bothered sometimes proves really worth it. This is how jeweller Seb Brown and ceramicist Jessilla Rogers met. A firm friendship ensued, and it wasn’t long before a collaboration between these two likeminded creatives was underway!
Late last year, the two friends came together in a group show, joining forces to create one unique ceramic piece. Jessilla created the sculptural vessel, while Seb painted and decorated it, referencing the distinctive shapes and silhouettes familiar in his own work. They were chuffed with the results, and saw the potential to take the collaboration further. Over the past year, the pair has been working to create a suite of one-off vessels, in an exhibition opening at Pieces of Eight Gallery this Thursday.
Genuine Relic brings together Jessilla and Seb’s shared obsession with museums, relics, artefacts and regalia. ‘We wanted to make some new works, which reminded us of old things,’ mentions Seb. The combination of their two practices has resulted in works predominately made from ceramics, complemented by timber, silver and spray painted details. ‘It’s been really good to see the merging of our aesthetics, because the results are so different to things we would typically create alone,’ explains Jessilla.
‘The show has been a bit of a job swap, Jess making some silver pieces and me making ceramics,’ says Seb. ‘We have been exploring the juxtaposition of forms, colours and textures, and the clashes and harmonies of our personalities.’
