Title, inspiration and integral raw material, ‘sand’ is the humble undercurrent of the latest collection from Dinosaur Designs. Sand takes us back to our childhood, when we used to fill jars with beautiful layers of sand. This layering effect inspired the development of our new palette,’ say Creative Directors Louise Olsen and Stephen Ormandy.

Nature is a constant source of inspiration for the duo. For this collection, they have been drawn to the geological process by which sand is turned into stones, and stones into rock. This natural phenomena is mirrored through Dinosaur Designs’ man-made creations. They have employed a new casting technique, suspending grains of sand within their organic forms. ‘Castings have been developed which allow the sand to be mixed into the resin, creating the rhythmic forms found in sandstone,’ explain Louise and Stephen.

‘In something as humble as a grain of sand, we see time and the vastness of the universe in miniature,’ tell the Creative Directors. ‘Without drawing attention to itself, sand carries in its smallness a greatness beyond all possibility.’

The Sand collection is available from Dinosaur Designs’ Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney stores, as well as online.
