Not every home is designed by an architect, but we’re huge advocates for the role of architects in shaping our streets, neighbourhoods and cities. Great architecture is about more than just aesthetics – the buildings we create and inhabit say so much about us, and become a powerful legacy for generations to come. Thoughtfully designed buildings also contribute to the development of community, and a sense of place for all who interact with them.
According to Vanessa Bird, Victorian Chapter President of the Australian Institute of Architects , ‘Living and working in well-designed buildings influences the way we think and feel; it inspires and uplifts us, promotes well being and health and can bring us together in new ways’. Above all, she notes, ‘the value of good architecture is about creating places for people’.
Late last month, The Victorian Chapter of the Australian Institute of Architects announced the winners of the 2017 Victorian Architecture Awards. These awards present a diverse, yet succinct snapshot of the kinds of homes we are designing, building and inhabiting in Australia right now.
