‘Less is more’ is making a comeback in a big way! With house prices and rents ever on the rise, the ‘Tiny Homes’ trend is one we’re seeing more and more of. But living small doesn’t have to mean scrimping on style. Designer-builder, Indi Hangan of Tiny Homes Australia has been creating his pint-sized, mobile homes since the start of this year – and has already gathered a strong following.
‘I believe the interest is due to high home prices in Australia, as well as people just wanting to downsize and simplify,’ Indi explains. ‘There’s also demand from those who need an extra bedroom for parents or teenagers, but aren’t keen to build a permanent structure in the backyard.’
After finishing high school, Indi jumped straight into a carpentry apprenticeship, earning his Certificate IV in Building and Construction. He then gained experience, before sitting for his own building licence, and establishing Hangan Construction in 2013. Tiny Homes Australia launched four years later, with the idea to ‘go small’ coming from Indi’s father and business partner.
Though built on a smaller-scale and optimised to travel, Indi applies typical construction practices to his custom tiny-home builds. ‘I didn’t want this business to just offer a few models, as I know I can confidently design, draw up and build to suit a customer’s needs,’ he explains – and this is true, he’s even had a request for one with a roof balcony!
Aware he’s taking a bit of a risk with his atypical product, Indi’s been encouraged by the excitement people have over his beautiful little homes. ‘People love the idea of these, however I’m not sure there are enough out there to say there is a market just yet,’ he tells, ‘but I’m always looking forward to meeting future customers, and making their tiny dreams come true!’
Tiny Homes Australia is having an Open Day at their Ringwood factory next week (November 4th). For more information visit the website, here.
