The 16th Australian Interior Design Awards delivers a stellar line-up of the country’s very best interior design projects. This year’s entries have been praised for fearless design approaches that push boundaries to reinvent typologies, and for experimenting with spatial planning as well as improving user experience.
On Friday, the 2019 Awards were presented in Melbourne, with the top accolade for Residential Design bestowed upon joint winners: Oak House by Kennedy Nolan and Edsall Street by Ritz&Ghougassian. These projects were commended for creating a seamless balance between the indoor and out, through a cohesive material application and compelling use of colour. The jury also noted how both residences exceeded their briefs, taking design to the next level by making it appear unabashedly personal for the homeowners.
The Residential Decoration prize went to Sydney-based Arent&Pyke for its much-hyped Under The Tree project (which also picked up the 2019 Belle Coco Republic Best Residential Interior award this year!).
Melbourne-based design practice, Pierce Widera was highlighted as the one to watch – receiving the Emerging Interior Design Practice award – for its diverse portfolio of hospitality interiors, which employ confident detailing and thoughtful use of materials. ‘Completing six projects in their first year, they have a distinct creative approach and clear design identity, articulated through their strong aesthetic, which evokes a particular mood and memorable experience for patrons,’ the jury detailed.
