Have you ever noticed how certain colours can totally change your mood? ‘Colour and mood are intimately connected, so it’s important to surround yourself with colours that help you feel positive’, explains Andrea Lucena-Orr, Dulux Colour and Communications Manager.
After the year we’ve had, it’s no surprise that the Dulux colour team experts have been putting in extensive research to find the most soothing colours for the palette of the Dulux Colour Forecast 2021. They’ve come up with three tonal Summer palettes that reflect a feeling of reassurance and comfort, while still having a bit of fun with it! These tones are drawn from nature – including brighter, oceanic shades of blue-green and coral, muted botanical greens, warm whites and soothing mauve-greys.
Melbourne stylist Bree Leech has worked with hues from the Dulux ‘Reset’ palette to give this 1970s home a contemporary update – ‘Daintree’ in the dining room, ‘Light Ceramic’ in the living room and ‘Gold Pheasant’ + ‘Treeless’ to seriously impressive effect in the kitchen!
‘This dramatic hue gives the room a distinct mood and enriches the space’, Bree explains of her use of the bold ‘Daintree’ colour as a feature colour in the dining room. ‘The features of the room, such as the rustic brick wall, archway and timber lining, are all amplified through the use of colour and a backdrop is created to contrast against the crisp white pendant light.’
Bree opted for something a little bit more subtle – ’Light Ceramic’ – in the living room, allowing the styling to really take centre stage. ‘The shelving unit is the hero of the space, so I highlighted it by painting the wall behind in subtle green’, she explains. ‘A plump, vintage velvet sofa adds curves and a touch of retro cool to the space. A patterned rug adds softness underfoot and helps zone the living area in this open-plan space’.
We’ve seen interior experts have a lot more fun with colour in kitchens over the past couple of years, moving away from bright white spaces and bringing in a little more richness and warmth, beautifully demonstrated by the terracotta hue used here as a feature in the kitchen. ‘The kitchen is extraordinary, with high ceilings and warm timber cabinetry. I wanted even more warmth in this room and was inspired by that chilli red oven’, Bree says. ‘To soften the contrast between the feature wall and the white in the room, I opted to paint the rangehood a gentle blush – Dulux Wash&Wear in Treeless. This colour also sits beautifully against the brass tap.’
And there you have it – three rooms with totally different yet cohesive vibes in the same house, all created using not much more than a paintbrush!
