Previously a beachside hippie mecca, these days Byron is known for its impeccable, breezy aesthetic and pitch-perfect thrown-togetherness. Longtime design curators Tigmi Trading perfectly encapsulate that vibe. Now even more so, with their new flagship store!
Tigmi founder, Danielle McEwan, and her husband designed the space themselves, completing their transformation of a daggy, besser brick industrial building over the pandemic period last year. ‘We wanted it to be a large-scale, open-plan space that could act as a showroom, a functional working space, our office headquarters, our dispatch and enable us to shoot new product on-site,’ Danielle explains.
Their clear vision involved using raw, natural materials to make the cavernous space feel warm and inviting, while still retaining its awe-inspiring scale. A central part of this plan was bringing on the couple’s friend Steve Clark (aka denHolm) to create a distinctive feature wall, with custom shelving and two additional carved ‘characters’ that flank the entry.
Danielle used a plaster render to sweep the exterior that would replicate the ‘old’ feel of the facades of her favourite buildings in European cities like Paris and Milan; while internally, a natural render gives a more tactile finish. An enormous set of steel doors make a statement at the entryway, and the front desk is wrapped in chocolate brown zellige tile (traditional clay tiles from Morocco) – a feature Danielle describes as ‘a little jewel in the middle of the store.’
The showroom itself is filled with the brand’s own rugs, furniture and a mixture of pieces from local and international makers. Ceramics from Soft Edge Studio sit atop rough-hewn timber tables by Lex Williams, while woven Berber rugs from Morocco carpet the floor, underneath rattan armchairs handmade in India. Ceiling-high steel shelving occupies one wall, housing one-of-a-kind furniture pieces, salon style.
Though Tigmi have let go of their original retail space in central Byron, this new flagship has everything under one roof!
