Maggie Green is a Mangala woman and talented artist who turns stories from her childhood into geometric grids of glowing colour.
Now based in Western Australia’s Pilbara region, she was raised on a Myroodah Station — located in a remote area of the Kimberley — and every one of her striking paintings is an ode to this time. They capture the cattle station where she grew up, went to school, and worked; the dam she visited for fishing and swimming; and the bush tucker she collected and hunted for.
Her works are made up of layers of paint in joyful colour combinations and abstract shapes that represent the station’s landscape, the roads, and squares for the buildings. But with Maggie’s love of bright colour, these reoccurring motifs come to life a little bit differently in every artwork, as Maggie says: ‘I paint what colour I like at that time’.
Myroodah Station was also where Maggie first started painting, learning her distinctive painting style from her mother and grandmother.
‘I learnt to paint with family. I learnt from my mother and I painted with my twin sister under the gum trees. We all paint together,’ Maggie says.
Decades later, Maggie has carried on this practice in spectacular form, having appeared in exhibitions all around Australia — including here with us at TDF!
We’re proud to have worked with Maggie’s art centre Spinifex Hill Studio on two (sold-out!) art exhibitions, and we couldn’t be more excited about bringing her work to our Collingwood gallery once again.
‘Patterns Of Country’ features 11 beautiful paintings that will be on show from March 23 until March 27, and trust us when we say they’re even more beautiful in person.
Pre-sales for this show have officially opened, but they won’t last long! You can see a complete list of all available works at our TDF Collect website here — if a piece has caught your eye, get in quick and email art@thedesignfiles.net to purchase
