All Kinds Of Wonderful At Fringe Furniture 32

In its 32nd year, the experimental furniture event is now officially older than most of the TDF staff.

Celebrating the wild and wacky, the visionary and the philosophical, Fringe Furniture returns this September to the Abbotsford Convent for its 32nd (!) exhibition as part of the Melbourne Fringe Festival. Featuring a record-breaking number of pieces, the conceptual furniture showcase has prevailed as an important fixture for upcoming artists and designers.

Fringe Furniture is a veritable playground of ideas, an exhibition where design meets possibility meets provocation meets beauty, a chance for artists to think outside the box, re-design the box, turn the box into a hat-stand and then set the hat-stand on fire,’ explains the Festival of itself. Hopefully, there is some hyperbole in that promise of pyrotechnics! As well as the exhibition itself, the event will feature an expanded public program of tours and talks from the artists and designers on show.

For the first time ever, the long-standing event has introduced the Fringe Furniture for Gender Equality initiative, supported by the Naomi Milgrom Foundation, offering a 15.3% discount to registrations from female and non-binary designers. This specific number was chosen for good reason, reflecting the current gender-pay gap in Australia.
