We have long admired the work of local textile designer Lauren Cassar, who creates exquisite, painterly textiles for her much loved local label, Mirador.

‘After The Storm, When The Flowers Bloom’ is Lauren’s first solo exhibition, and brings together 14 original works on paper, inspired by the artist’s travels across Australia, from the red centre to Tasmania’s Tarkine.

Like many textile designers, Lauren’s designs invariably start as paintings, sketches and drawings, so, whilst she hasn’t exhibited in a formal way before, creating a body of work for exhibition was a natural progression for Lauren, and a welcome new challenge!

‘I often paint small, and for fabric only, which moves and folds and hides and surprises certain parts of my paintings’ Lauren says. ‘Painting for the exhibition, where the artwork is fixed, unchanging and on display permanently, was very intimidating at first, but as I painted I became proud of the process and the outcomes, and fell deeply in love with each piece.’

The works in this show attempt to capture a feeling of presence, of sitting and simply being in the landscape. The artist’s delicate use of watercolour on velvety paper speaks to the unique feeling of the land after a storm, conveying lush gullies, wet dirt, and the softness of the landscape.

In addition to the exhibition, Lauren is excited to host a special Watercolour Workshop and Exhibition Preview within the gallery space, on Friday March 16th, from 4.00pm – 6.00pm.

Here, Lauren will be demonstrating her use of watercolour, before guiding participants to create their own watercolour paintings, focussing on a floral still life arrangement. No painting experience necessary!

All workshop participants will receive a Mirador tote bag, and painting materials to take home. 100% of the proceeds from ticket sales ($80 each) will support SEED: Australia’s first Indigenous youth led climate network.
