Baina‘s checkerboard towels have been a must-have for design fans ever since the brand launched in 2019.
Founded by Kiwi friends Anna Fahey and Bailey Meredith, the local label has become a cult favourite for its ethical and luxurious towels, bathmats, and face cloths that are instantly recognisable in any bathroom. You would have spotted them in plenty of home tours right here on TDF, and they’ve even garnered a celebrity fan base over in the US.
So we’ve been eagerly anticipating the latest Baina collection, UMBRA, which launched this week! And this time, the brand is leaning into calming and earthy colours.
The limited-edition range is a special collaboration with the LA-based furniture and lighting designers behind Estudio Persona, who are known for their minimalistic aesthetic and neutral tones.
This new four-piece towelling collection draws inspiration from the phenomena of ‘umbra’ — the darkest part of a shadow cast by an object.
Characterised by a tonal colour palette of Stone, Sand, Rust and Bark, the range subtly plays with light and shade, using a jacquard technique to form linear patterns on each towel. You can pick from the bath sheet, bath towel, and hand towel sizes, or treat yourself to one of each, available in a full set.
‘With a mutual affinity for modern design, natural materials, and high-quality craftsmanship, inviting Estudio Persona into the world of bathing felt like an organic alignment,’ Baina co-founder and creative director Bailey says.
Plus in a first for Baina, the UMBRA collection is crafted entirely from cut pile, organic cotton velour — resulting in an extra-plush texture and velvety feel for enhanced softness.
Sounds like something we want to get our hands on…
