New Zealand-based homewares and furniture brand Città has given their beloved Joni mat — celebrated for its tactile texture and retro-inspired palette — a grown up new size.

Now available as a large wool rug, Città’s Joni design is stepping into the heart of the home, bringing its distinctive charm to living rooms and bedrooms.

First released as a mat in 2024, the Joni quickly became a favourite for its unique popcorn-style weave and rich nostalgic hues.

‘The idea of heavy woollen mats took me back to the 1960s and 1970s,’ says Città’s in-house textile designer Imogen Tunnicliffe. ‘I was inspired by the living spaces and furnishings from those eras, where rich, saturated colours were predominant — that typical retro palette of deep wine reds, mustard yellows, earthy green browns, and deep-sea blues.’

Imogen’s design vision has translated seamlessly into a larger format. Each Joni rug is made from premium New Zealand wool and crafted in a small, family-owned factory in Northern India. Every piece carries the GoodWeave certification — a mark of ethical craftsmanship that guarantees zero child or forced labour and promotes fair working conditions. It’s a label that reflects Città’s deep commitment to integrity, transparency, and long-term partnerships with its artisan makers.

The Joni rug comes in five colourways: Baltic/Pine, Oatmeal, Paprika/Mulberry, Orange Peel/Saffron, and Kelp/Umber.

For fans of the original, the Joni mat remains available in three practical sizes — ideal for bathrooms, kitchens, and entryways.
