There’s no shortage of amazing local designers in Australia, and Nau have a knack for discovering some of our most talented emerging creatives.
Cult founder and director of Richard Munao saw a gap in the market to amplify the work of emerging creatives, inspiring him to establish Nau as Cult’s own in-house furniture brand in 2017.
Since then, Nau have worked with a number of homegrown talents to create contemporary furniture, lighting, and accessories that feels uniquely Australian. And the latest range by Sydney-based designer Timothy Robertson, doesn’t disappoint.
Second-generation furniture designer Timothy was dubbed as one to watch after he won the title of ‘Australia’s Next Top Designer’ at Design Show Australia last year, and just six months later he’s created his own collection, Pa — a heartfelt tribute to his father.
The range includes a Lounge Chair, Dining Armchair, Dining Chair and Stool crafted in a range of unique native Australian timbers like Tasmanian Blackwood, Victorian Mountain Ash, and Silky Oak; along with other standard Nau finishes.
‘Growing up in Western Australia, I watched my father use many different Australian timbers, it’s something that I myself haven’t used before but was excited for the opportunity,’ Timothy says.
Each of the pieces features slim lines and a lightweight frame, ensuring it can fit into any space. The collections classic but striking silhouettes are inspired by Japanese design, in addition to Timothy’s own design ethos that inspiration from Australia’s natural environment, something he learned from his father’s furniture practice. Plus, because Pa’s construction is so simple, all parts of the chairs can easily be either repaired or replaced.
‘I really wanted to create a compact lounge chair that was visually calm, comfortable, safe, honest and that felt like a big warm hug. The timber has such a lovely soft velvety feel about it,’ he adds.
