Taking inspiration from botanical forms, ancient relics and astronomical matter, Blume by Nicolette Johnson consists of over 50 handmade, one-of-a-kind works by the Brisbane-based artist at paper boat press in Ashgrove. Within a background in photographic art and social documentary, Nicolette has only been studying ceramics since 2015!
In that short time she’s become a serious force to be reckoned with in a new crop of up-and-coming Australian ceramicists. With works recently acquired by the National Gallery of Victoria for their permanent collection, Nicolette has certainly earned a seat at the table with some of the best.
Nicolette creates her curious vessels using a combination of wheel throwing and coiling, spending days attaching each individual appendage to her works. This painstaking process results in pieces that appear to be excavated from ancient worlds, or dredged up from the deep-sea – completely unique to anything else out there!
